The Project

Tuning the Air is a wholly unique approach to musical performance. The 8-member acoustic guitar ensemble performs an inspired repertoire in a 360-degree configuration - chamber music with the chamber defined by the musicians themselves. Delicate improvisations circulate and powerful rhythmic-melodic patterns cross, and weave through, the audience. It is a breathtaking experience!

From ambient to rock to classical to minimalist, the music is selected and arranged to take maximum advantage of the possibilities presented by a multi-player ensemble and the physical relationship of performers and audience. 'Circulations' - improvisations that have become a distinctive characteristic of Guitar Craft performances - bridge original compositions and adapted works creating a single, musical presentation akin to a theater performance.

Based on the live-theatre company model, Tuning the Air's performance company features an 8-member acoustic guitar ensemble, production staff and administration. Every Monday night during a season, the production company stages a deliciously dense 45-minute show in a performance environment designed to ensure the quality of the musical experience.

Now in its 4th year, Tuning the Air is the most ambitious performance project undertaken by Seattle Circle, with more than 100 performances since its inception. Expanding on their early, experimental projects, such as the 1998 "Secret Cafe", Tuning the Air embraces the concept of the "location-based performance Team". Just as home studios have provided musicians the ability to take full creative control of their recordings, and the Internet has provided the means for promotion and distribution, Tuning the Air challenges the traditional touring model and suggests one alternative to the performance venue, offering the possibility of a sustained musical relationship to the community.

Seattle Circle

In the mid-90's several Seattle-areas musicians began working together on the material taught in seminal British guitarist Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft courses. Within the next few years, several more people from various parts of the country - drawn by the possibilities presented by this musical community - uprooted themselves and moved to Seattle. (This migration of dedicated musicians continues to this day.)

In 2001, Seattle Circle officially registered as a 501(3)c non-profit arts orginazation. Part of Seattle Circle's mission is to explore possibilities that can only be realized in a stable and permanent community. Seattle Circle continues to provide education and performance opportunities to individuals in the greater Puget Sound region.
